Corvette Stingray, the new Chevrolet Corvette in 1963

The second generation, or mid-year was designed by Larry Shinoda with the mayor inspiration from a previous unproduced designer called the “Q” by Peter Brock and Chuck Pohlman, and under the styling direction of Bill Mitchel, started in 1963 and ended in 1967. Introducing a new name Corvette Stingray, The 1963 model year Corvette was the first year for a Coupe with its distinctive split rear window and non functioning hood vents as well as an independent rear suspension. The split rear window was discontinued in 1964 due to safety concerns. Because they made the design too busy, the hood vents were also cut. Power for 1963 was at 360 hp hitting 375 hp in 1969.

Four wheel disc brakes were introducing in 1965, as  was a “big block” engine option. Side exhaust pipes became optional on the 1965 stingray and persisted through 1967 then again for 1969. Chevrolet would up the ante in 1969 with introduction an even larger 427 CID version, creating what would be one of the most collectible Corvettes ever. 1967 Corvette Stingray originally was going to be the first of the C3 generation sports car. In 2004, International named the Stingray number five on the list of top sport cars of the 1960s.

How about chassis and engine this Corvette Stingray? The Corvette received mayor restyling in 1963 including a divided rear window for a new “split window” fastback coupe. The sides of the front fenders, behind the wheel openings, were decorated with two long, horizontal “wind split” indentations or louvers that were designed to look like brake cooling duets, although they were not functional. Front fender louvers, vents on the roof side panels and ribbed rocker panel molding were styling features used on the sides of the new Corvette. The interior had circular gauges with black faces. There was storage space under the seats of early models seven interior colors were offered: Black, White, Silver, Silver-blue, Daytona Blue, Red, Tan. Seven exterior colors were available: tuxedo black, Ermine, Riverside Red, Silver Blue, Daytona Blue, Saddle Tan, Sebring Silver. All were available with a Black, White or Beige Soft Top.
